I am neither a developer, nor am I a designer, but this hasn’t stopped me from tinkering with WordPress themes developed by other. But never has a theme’s original author liked my customizations to be worthy of a mention. Not until now at least!

Will Wilkins, the developer of the IAMWW w2 WordPress theme has showcased my version of his theme in his IAMWW w2 WordPress Theme Adoptions and Adaptations post. This might not mean much to you, but to me, well, I am flabbergasted. Thanks Will for the mention and obviously the theme.

Also check out his latest WordPress theme, IAMWW w2 DnD, which is quite similar to the original, but is much easier to install as it doesn’t require any plugins to make it look the way it’s supposed to.

Let’s not forget to thank UpstartBlogger the guy who came up with the original idea.

Name Your Kid Google, or not

In India, it’s an age old custom to name children after famous film personalities, celestial objects, and even Gods; I’ve lost count of how many Shivas, Krishnas, Rams, or Surajs I have known in my life.

With the Internet becoming an integral part of our lives, do our future generations get to be named after popular website or service? This might sound strange, but it’s already happening.

Amit Agarwal of Digital Inspiration has named his son Google. I think Amit would have done this because he expects his son to epitomize Google. I really don’t know, and it really doesn’t matter, the kid is Amit’s son and he has every right to name his son whatever he wants. His son isn’t going to mind either.

Personally, I for one would not like to name my kid after something (Google) that doesn’t have any physical form!

Redoable 1,1 is Better than 2813

In the past few days, I have tried many different themes for my blog, Blue Zinfandel Squared Enhanced 2.0, Torn v1.0, Minimalistic1.5 1.0, and even the Garland theme customized for WordPress.org, and these are just the ones I remember by name. But none of these have managed to stick onto my blog for more than a day. So I have reverted back to my all-time favorite 2813 WordPress theme by ellfoner.com.

Surely you would be wondering that if I liked the 2813 theme so much why did I ever change it in the first place? The answer is that even the 2813 is not suited to my specific needs. For reasons unknown to me, Ell (2813 author) did not enable paged navigation in the theme. What this means is that if I want readers to view all my posts, I must display all of them on the home page itself. Unlike other WordPress themes, I cannot choose to display say 10 posts on the front page, and move the rest to other pages.

I am no coding guru but I did try and enable paged navigation. I asked around in the forums and even asked Ell to help me set it up. Ell did get back saying that she would look into it, but when that didn’t happen, I got frustrated and tried other themes.

As it turns out, trying other themes hasn’t helped end my frustration and I have decided to move back to 2813 theme. Though, I will have to modify my requirements and choose to display all my 15 odd posts on the front page.

Hopefully, Ell will fix this paged navigation thingy and allow me to control my blog the way I want to.

Thanks to Alpesh Nakar, I came across the the Redoable Theme for WordPress. As you can see, it is quite exquisite. It is very customizable. HJere’s how the theme customization page (only a small part of it) looks like.

Of course, a big thanks to Dean J Robinson, the guy who created this wonderful theme.

Chuck Those Gmail Invites

Till about an hour ago I was the proud owner of about 400 Gmail invites (I have more than one Gmail account), but as of now, they amount to nothing, not that they fetched me money when they were needed to sign-up for Gmail. account.

Unless you were picnicking on planet Mars, you would already be having at least one Gmail account. If not go over to www.gmail.com and sign-up.Then you are free to return to Mars, try the Moon, they say the weather’s pretty nice out there!
